HEADACHES

Headaches are a common issue that we treat at Somerset Hills Chiropractic. They can be due to a wide variety of causes including tightness in the neck muscles, drug reactions, low blood sugar, temporomandibular joint dysfunction (TMJ), high blood pressure, fatigue, and stress. Most headaches can be categorized into two groups: migraine headaches and tension headaches (also known as cervicogenic headaches. There is also a third categorization, though it is less common, called a cluster headache.

TENSION HEADACHES

The most common type of headache is tension headaches. The pain typically spreads throughout the head and the sufferer feels like they are wearing a tight bonnet. Doctors divide tension headaches into two types – chronic and episodic. Episodic tension headaches last anywhere from a half an hour to a week and recur up to two weeks each month. Chronic headaches, on the other hand, may be continuous and last for hours. If you have that feeling of a band around your head for more than 15 days out of a month for at least three months in a row, you may be suffering from chronic tension headaches.

MIGRAINE HEADACHES

Migraines not as common and people can actually suffer a migraine without having a headache. Migraine symptoms include nausea, vomiting, spotty vision and sometimes abnormal speech depending on the severity.

CLUSTER HEADACHES

Cluster headaches, the least common type of headache, are thought to be brought on by genetics, alcohol, or strong scents like household cleaners or a strong perfume. Cluster headache symptoms include tension in your eye, drooping eyelid, swelling, sweating, and nasal congestion.

One way you may be able to feel better is by improving your posture as that may keep your neck muscles more relaxed. Our chiropractors can assess your spinal alignment and make adjustments as needed. Because many tension headaches start in the neck, your chiropractor may initially focus on adjusting the cervical vertebrae. We may also suggest relaxation techniques, ergonomics, and helpful exercises.

Chiropractic offers pain relief safely and effectively without the effects of medication. If you suffer from headaches, fill out the appointment request form to schedule an appointment at our chiropractic clinic so we can help alleviate your symptoms.
