Chiropractic can help with Ear Infections? What!

Can Chiropractic Adjustments Help Kids with Ear Infections?

Ear infections are a common sight in most children. In fact, research shows that ear infections are the most common reasons for visits to the pediatrician. The American Chiropractic Association also states that about 50 percent of children will suffer at least one middle ear infection before they attain age 1 and 75 percent before their third birthday.

Children are at a higher risk of ear infections than adults due to the shape of their Eustachian tubes. In children, the Eustachian tubes are shortened and horizontal, creating a shorter passageway for bacteria that migrate from the throat and ears into the middle ear, leading to a pooling of fluid in the area.

How Can Chiropractic Help Reduce Ear Infection?

Chiropractic adjustments have become popular among many parents as a natural and non-invasive alternative to antibiotics and surgery for the treatment of ear infections in their children. Chiropractic is not a method of treatment for ear infections; rather, it is a procedure that use spinal adjustments to restore normal body function by improving the function of the nervous system. In other words, chiropractic helps to optimize the body's function by enhancing the function of the nerve system.

Several studies show that chiropractic adjustments can produce almost magic-like results for ear infections in children. In one paper published in 2012, researchers reviewed 15 case reports involving 167 subjects. The majority of the patients reported reduced symptoms of an ear infection called Otitis media after regular chiropractic adjustments.

The mechanism is all based on the immense power of the nerve system on other parts of the body. By adjusting the Atlas vertebra (1st vertebrae in the neck) and occiput (base of the skull), chiropractors can set off a chain reaction that will help alleviate the symptoms of an ear infection. The nerves in the upper cervical region influence the function of muscles around the Eustachian tube. By applying gentle adjustments to the upper cervical region, chiropractic can help the surrounding muscles relax, allowing the ears to drain naturally.

While you have the right as a parent to choose the treatment of choice for any health challenges confronting your child, chiropractic presents an easy and painless way of achieving rapid recovery from ear infections in kids. With gentle chiropractic adjustments to the Atlas and Occiput vertebrae, the fluid in the middle ear drains naturally, enhancing the body's immune response. An improved immune system increases the body's defense mechanisms, and thus promotes faster recovery and helps fight off any recurring ear infections.

As research progresses into the health benefits of chiropractic care, we will continue to discover the variety of ways through which chiropractic adjustments can enhance our lives. Until then, remember that chiropractic adjustments can also help relieve ear infections, promote spine health, reduce strain and stress after childbirth, and so much more.  Chiropractic is not the panacea for everything nor do we treat ear infections.  As chiropractors we focus on optimizing the spine and nervous system so that the body can take care of itself naturally without the use of drugs or surgery.

So, if you want your child to have the best chance to optimize their health and wellbeing during those first few precious years of life please have them checked by a chiropractor. Don’t procrastinate now is the time to do so, especially if they are struggling with ear infections!
