Data from the Centers for Diseases Control and Prevention (CDC) states that two out of three American adults have pre-hypertension or hypertension. Hypertension has been a global epidemic and a leading cause of death worldwide. Hypertension increases the risk of high blood pressure, stroke, and heart diseases. For many years, pharmaceuticals were the only way of controlling hypertension and elevated blood pressure, but these medications have several side effects, causing many to do more harm than good.
The good news is that a unique chiropractic adjustment may help lower high blood pressure without using any medication, according to 2007 research coming out of the University of Chicago.
This natural chiropractic adjustment is based on the realignment of the Atlas vertebra. By realigning the Atlas vertebra (1st vertebrae in your neck), researchers have found that participants experienced a significant reduction in their blood pressure levels.
While speaking to study leader George Bakris noted that the procedure delivers the effect of two blood pressure medications given in combination and appears to be free of any adverse effects.
For the study, 25 participants with early-stage high blood pressure received the chiropractic adjustment to realign the Atlas vertebra while 25 similar patients received a sham chiropractic adjustment. Both groups didn’t know whether they received the adjustment or placebo, but after eight weeks of undergoing the procedure the results were incredible.
The group which received the treatment experienced on average 14/8 mm Hg reduction in systolic and diastolic blood pressure respectively. On the other hand, none of the patients that received the sham treatment experienced a similar drop in blood pressure levels. During the eight-week study, none of the patients were on blood pressure medication.
What’s the relationship between the spine and hypertension?
Optimal brain and body function requires proper spine alignment because the spine houses your nervous system. Researchers believe that a misaligned Atlas vertebra can result in muscular stress in the adjoining areas, disturbing arterial blood circulation and causing elevated blood pressure. When done correctly, a chiropractic Atlas adjustment, a non-invasive and painless procedure, can help relieve stress at the base of the brain, effectively boosting the body's natural ability to regulate blood pressure levels.
The results of this study further demonstrate that chiropractic care can not only treat musculoskeletal injuries, but it can also be an effective and natural way of regulating blood pressure levels among other health benefits.
So, if you are struggling with high blood pressure or know someone who is, you need to schedule your chiropractic assessment to see if your Atlas could be the problem and now is the time to do so!
