Chiropractic Care Boosts Antioxidant Production
Chiropractic adjustments have long been used to maintain spinal health and alleviate pain. However, recent research suggests that chiropractic care may be an effective tool for enhancing antioxidant production in the body naturally.
Antioxidants play a critical role in safeguarding the body against the deleterious effects of free radicals, helping to protect every part of our body from the harmful effects of oxidative stress in our environment. According to the findings of a study that investigated the impact of chiropractic adjustments on antioxidant production in the body, researchers found that getting adjusted is an effective way to increase antioxidant levels.
During the study, researchers administered ten chiropractic adjustments each to 23 patients suffering from severe back and neck pain over a five-week period. The researchers collected blood specimens before and after the study to identify changes in the concentration of three specific antioxidants including superoxide dismutase, glutathione peroxidase, and catalase.
After the conclusion of the study, researchers discovered that the levels of the antioxidants superoxide dismutase (SOD) and glutathione peroxidase (GPx) had increased over the course of the five weeks while the levels of catalase, the third antioxidant, remained constant.
The findings of the study suggest that chiropractic adjustments could be an effective way of boosting the body's antioxidant production, significantly improving endocrine and immune function and helping to boost your quality of health. While the number of subjects used for the study was limited, the results show the huge health-enhancing potential of having regular chiropractic adjustments.
In another study published in 2005 in the Journal of Vertebral Subluxation, researchers also found that chiropractic adjustments could protect the body against oxidative stress by increasing the serum level of thiol, an antioxidant that helps the body fight off free radicals.
In the study which investigated the role of chiropractic care on the serum concentration of thiol, researchers divided 76 participants into three groups. The first group received short-term chiropractic adjustments; the second group was given long-term chiropractic care, while the third group was not given any form of chiropractic care.
After the study was completed researchers found that the concentration of serum thiol in healthy participants who received up to two or more years of chiropractic care was higher compared to participants who did not receive chiropractic care.
The researchers concluded that the study shows that chiropractic care could enhance the ability of the body to cope with environmental stress by metabolically increasing the production of health-enhancing antioxidants like thiol.
Antioxidants can also be derived from a diet rich in fruits, vegetables, and grains including cruciferous vegetables such as broccoli and cauliflower, spinach, asparagus, sweet potatoes, berries, nuts, carrots, peppers, and others.
These studies show that when combined with a healthy well-rounded diet, regular chiropractic care may help increase antioxidant production in the body, significantly boosting general health and wellness, reducing overall healthcare bills, and improving quality of life.
