Increase Pelvic Floor Stability Through Chiropractic Care
For pregnant women who wish to have natural childbirth, the ability to relax and contract the pelvic floor muscles is a critical factor in achieving a smooth, natural delivery. Recent studies now show that regular chiropractic adjustment can help pregnant women achieve increased relaxation of these crucial muscles during the gestation period which may make delivery easier and prevent several disorders of the pelvic floor.
According to the results of a study by Spinal Research, we now have more insight into the effects of chiropractic adjustment on pelvic floor muscles in pregnant and non-pregnant women. The study investigated the impact of adjustments on the function of the pelvic floor muscles. While this is the first time this kind of research is taking place on a quantitative scale, the results were nevertheless promising and have opened up more grounds for further research into the potential of chiropractic adjustments for pelvic floor stability.
Researchers found an increased ability to relax pelvic muscles at rest in study participants who received chiropractic treatment. While there is a need for more studies to validate the relationship between chiropractic and pregnancy, the researchers hope that this can be used to help pregnant women achieve greater ability to have a natural delivery.
The women who participated in the study had ultrasounds during three distinct movements before and after receiving chiropractic care. They had ultrasounds while squeezing as hard as they could, bearing down (a pushing that opens up the hiatus hole in the pelvic floor) and at rest.
No changes were noticed during the squeeze and push. However, they found that the hiatus hole became larger at rest. The researchers believe that the enlarged hiatus hole may be due to relaxation of muscles that make up the pelvic floor rim. The ability to open up these muscles is extremely crucial for natural birth.
If it turns out that regular adjustment could help women achieve greater pelvic floor control, this means that chiropractic care could help prevent future pelvic health dysfunctions, urinary incontinence, and natural birth complications. It is also thought that chiropractic care could help reduce delivery and recovery times in women if used during the entire pregnancy period.
Non-pregnant women also stand to benefit from chiropractic care, according to this study. Regular adjustments could improve the condition of the pelvic floor muscles, enhance sensory-motor control, and may help decrease the risk of future vaginal prolapse, urinary incontinence, and fecal incontinence.
The most exciting promise of this study is that chiropractic care may be an effective way of helping many women achieve their dream of having natural births devoid of any complications. It all starts with strong and stable pelvic floor muscles.
Chiropractic care can not only help improve general health and wellness, but it may also boost the chances of having safe, natural childbirths and may also help prevent pelvic floor dysfunctions in women in the future.
