Top 8 Reasons Why Children Should See a Chiropractor

It has been over a hundred years since chiropractors started caring for children. This safe, natural form of healthcare can take care of many common childhood ailments. Most parents who are already chiropractic patients themselves seeks chiropractic care for their children.

Chiropractic philosophy states that dysfunction or imbalance of the spine can result in dysfunction of the nervous system. Considering the nervous system controls and coordinates all of the systems of the body, spinal dysfunction can have extensive negative effects on your health. Chiropractors are trained to assess and correct this spinal dysfunction or imbalance.  Some of these imbalances can even happen during the birthing process or learning how to walk, just to name a few.  This is why we encourage all parents to have their children evaluated by a chiropractor.

Here are eight important reasons why your child should see a chiropractor:

Immune Support

Since chiropractic focuses on aligning the spine which allows for optimal nervous system functioning. The nervous system controls the immune system so if the nervous system is working optimally in turn the immune system will follow suit. Given that children have immature immune systems, it is very important to make sure that they are functioning optimally.

Children Fall, Jump, and Play Hard

Children will jump, pull themselves along the furniture, and have many tumbles as they are leaning about gravity. Making sure to get regular adjustment during this time of reckless abandonment helps to ensure your children will be as healthy as possible.  Even small imbalances over time can create more severe symptoms later down the road.  Getting small problems corrected as they occur will prevent more serious issues from occurring later in childhood or early adulthood.

Better Sleep

Proper alignment of your child’s body ensures that he will have a better night’s sleep which will enable you to sleep well too. Proper adjustments will take away the fear of your child having any pain that they are unable to let you know about.  Also, during an adjustment your bodies nervous system switches from sympathetic (fight or flight) to parasympathetic (rest and heal) which will allow your child sleep more soundly at night.

Better Concentration and Fewer Behavioral Issues

When a child is not properly aligned, there is a tendency for increased tension on their nervous system which can create concentration and behavioral issues.  This also has to deal with the body being stuck in sympathetic overload. When you are stuck in sympathetic overload your body has a very difficult time focusing and often children can lash out in frustration.

Help with Digestive Issues

Chiropractic can help with a number of digestive issues.  We have helped children with colic, acid reflux, constipation, and diarrhea.  Again the nervous system controls the entire digestive system.  Sometimes when transitioning your child from baby food to solid foods the immature digestive system needs a little help or boost.  This is a good time to make sure your child’s nervous system is functioning optimally.

High Breastfeeding Success

During child birth, it’s not just traumatic on mom but it can be traumatic on your baby as well. If a child’s neck and shoulders are misaligned, they may develop discomfort when breastfeeding specifically on one side. If you notice that your child is having difficulty feeding on one side versus the other or not at all make sure you have them checked by a chiropractor.

Help with Asthma and Breathing Issues

Nerves in the midback and neck if irritated can affect the bronchial tubes, lungs, and diaphragm. Again this causes nervous system interference and your child’s lungs cannot function optimally. Finding the area that is misaligned and adjusting the spine allows the body to heal itself which can help with asthma and allergies.

Chronic Ear Infections

Especially in younger children under the age of 2 fluid is more likely to get trapped in the middle ear cavity which can create a breeding ground for bacteria and viruses.  In early childhood the Eustachian tube is positioned horizontally but after the age of 2 it starts to angle down more which allows fluid to drain easier.  During this early childhood stage if there is any unnecessary inflammation from the neck or jaw it has a profound effect on how this fluid will drain from the ears.  This is why so many children get diagnosed with ear infections while they are going through teething.  Unfortunately, what is often missed is the misalignment of the first and second vertebrae of the child’s neck which complicates or ends up creating chronic ear infections.  Medically, antibiotics will kill the bacteria, but that doesn’t do anything about the fluid buildup or chronic inflammation from the neck or jaw.

As you can see, taking your children to be evaluated by a chiropractor is of immense importance. I am not saying that all children need to be adjusted.  All I am saying is that every child needs to be evaluated by a chiropractor to make sure their nervous system is functioning optimally.  If your child’s nervous system is functioning optimally you will be a much more relaxed parent because you will know that your child now has the greatest chance to grow up to their full potential and what parents doesn’t want that for their children!

As a disclaimer, as a chiropractor I do not treat any disease.  But, by releasing nervous system interference the body is then able to communicate with itself properly and when that happens your body can heal almost anything by itself.  Chiropractic is not the panacea for everything but when the bodies nervous system is functionally optimally anything is possible and that is my belief.  At Somerset Hills Chiropractic we encourage our patients to take more responsibility for their health and not wait for a crisis to occur but to be preventative in their healthcare.
